Who Are We?

SigningWorks was established in 2008 to provide clients with a high standard of British Sign Language (BSL)/English interpreting and communication services. We set up after consultation with the Deaf and interpreting community and we continue to work closely with them to ensure that our business provides a high quality range of services.

Meet the team

KathyKathy Turner – Director and Head of Administration (view video)

Having graduated from Cardiff University, Kathy lived and worked in Germany for several years before returning to Britain to work as a manager in the John Lewis Partnership, working in several different branches.

After taking a break to raise her children, she decided to change careers and went to Bristol University to do a degree in Deaf Studies and train as an interpreter.

Since then she has worked in the Deaf community and has applied her management techniques and commitment to customer service in the running of SigningWorks. It is her priority to ensure that everyone receives a quality service, and experiences a professionally run business that is real value for money.

ClareClare Reed – Director and BSL/Eng Interpreter (view video)

After training in the Performing Arts and learning BSL at a local college, Clare returned to Bristol in 2003 to study an MSc in Deaf Studies at Bristol University.

Clare has worked in the Bristol Deaf community since 2003, primarily undertaking theatre work with Deaf children, working as a Communication Support Worker and then becoming an interpreter. She enjoys working in all domains, however mental health, education (school and higher) and theatre interpreting are specialist areas of interest.

Having found her perfect business partner in Kathy, they created and set up SigningWorks. Together they have a shared vision and the same ethical approach to the business and are committed to providing an excellent service to the hearing and Deaf communities they work with.

HarryHarry Wadsworth - BSL/Eng Interpreter (view video)

As a young boy Harry first saw BSL being used on a train. He was fascinated and spent the rest of the short journey trying to guess what was being said. Many years later he was working in a restaurant that was close to Bristol University’s Centre for Deaf Studies which was sometimes used by students and staff. He decided to stop guessing and thought that he would try and learn some basic signs linked to food. He signed up for a Stage One course at the Centre for Deaf People and became hooked – he knew he wanted to know more than a few food signs and vowed to continue on to Stage Two. In 1998 he enrolled at CDS and graduated in 2000 with a Diploma of Higher Education in Deaf Studies (having opted for the interpreter route). Since then, he has worked at a Sign Language Interpreter in a number of roles – as a freelance, in-house interpreter at the University of Bristol and as a staff interpreter for an agency.
